How to Care for Wood Surfaces (And Which Products to Avoid)

Wood is beautiful — and sensitive

Wood surfaces don’t like aggressive chemicals, abrasive sponges, or too much water. The goal is gentle cleaning that protects the finish.

Do this

  • Dust first: dry microfiber removes grit that can scratch.
  • Damp, not wet: wring cloth well before wiping.
  • Test in a hidden spot: especially on older or treated wood.
  • Wipe dry: remove moisture to prevent marks.

Avoid this

  • Harsh abrasives and rough scrub pads
  • Strong degreasers on finished wood (can dull or strip)
  • Leaving water pooled on the surface

When in doubt: surface-safe products

If you’re unsure which product is suitable, choose a gentle cleaner intended for wood finishes. For high-value surfaces, professional guidance avoids expensive damage.
